Who We Are

WE are the friends of Gipton Wood

We are a group of local volunteers who care for this valuable ancient woodland at the heart or our community. Our mission is to help make Gipton Wood a thriving woodland for Nature, the community and the future.

Get Involved

All our activities and events are volunteer-led and depend on volunteers to carry them out. We always welcome new volunteers – all are welcome, regardless of age, experience or ability, enthusiasm is all that is required!

Events

We run a variety or conservation activities and community events in the Wood throughout the year, winning grants and raising donations to fund our work. From litter picking to tree thinning, from fungi forays to bat walks, there is always something for everyone and all are welcome to get involved.

History

We are proud of our story and impact. Friends of Gipton Wood formed in 2000 in response to fly tipping and general neglect. Gipton Wood was home to burnt out cars and discarded sofas. Today, thanks to our work the Wood is a beautiful and accessible green space, home to rare ancient woodland species, a thriving space for nature in the heart of the city.

Governance

We are governed by our Constitution which sets out our standards and policies and the way we are run. We are led by our Committee, and organise our activities in line with the Management Plan for Gipton Wood that we have agreed with Leeds City Council who own the Wood.
